Can someone tell me what is special or different? Doors, interior, trim?
Thanks

The Special models (Tudor, Fordor & Coupe) came in black only. They lacked bumper guards and stainless trim around the windshield and the side trim was painted black with a red pin stripe rather than stainless steel. They also featured a single tail light and single windshield wiper. On the inside, the right hand sunvisor, cigar lighter and bright metal radio grille were deleted. The dash trim panel was also painted metal rather than plastic as it was on Deluxe and Super Deluxe cars. There may be other differences, but this is what I saw in a quick scan of the club's 1941-1948 Ford book.

The Special was an ill concieved model intended to satisfy a whim of old Henry, in which he vehemently objected to the term "Standard" as used in reference to the base line Ford. Henry was emphatic in saying that there wasn't any such thing as a Standard Ford. As a result, the previous "Ford" model became the "DeLuxe", the previous "DeLuxe" became the "Super DeLuxe". So the "Special" was born, to become the base model at a fair savings to the consumer, but at a loss to Ford Motors. The model did not dispell the term "Standard" as intended, it did not fill a competitive void, and it lost money for Ford as a successful model. It did, however, raise the status of the DeLuxe and Super DeLuxe, and in that way, may have succeeded.

Lane Tech High School in Chicago had a fleet of Special 6 cyl. coupes that were used for driver training. They were donated by the Ford Motor Co.

Here is a picture of a '41 Special Coupe. This car belonged to Ventura V8er Lee Horn twenty some years ago. It was a V8 but was probably not delivered with the fog lights, grill guard and whitewall tires. Note the painted side trim with the red pin stripe.
