Topic: Upper Steering Shaft Bushing

Just removed the steering wheel and want to remove and replace the upper steering shaft bushing without removing the steering shaft. The entire steering column is still mounted in the car. How can this be done?

If the bushing is very old original ford style they glue them self into position and the rubber gets very hard. When you try to remove it, it is very difficult to brake it's grip on the inside of the column tube they may brake into pieces and the pieces can get into the top of the steering box. If your lucky try scr*w*ng a dent puller or a long screw or two into the old rubber and pulling on the screws.

just did this to a 40 coupe, screw a coupe of long 4 to 5" sheet metal screws into the bushing then go around the outside of the bushing with a stiff piece of metal, old hacksaw blade with the teeth ground off, this seperates the bushing from tube, try to pull up on the bushing gently with the screws using a pair of vice grips and if you are lucky it will come out. the 40 had another bushing further down the shaft and it also came out, I used a vacuum cleaner with a short piece of tubing to clean out the column
