I am trying to put together the wheel lock assembly for the inside spare tire mount for a 39 Sedan Delivery. The only good pictures I find are in the green book on p 10. The 37-39 Sedan Deliveries use a bolt 3/8-24 2 inches long while the 37-39 passenger cars use a nut. The locks look similar. The passenger nut looks like an extra long wheel stud with a slot in it for the lock to grasp. I have a two headed bolt 3/8 fine bolt with an end that looks like a 3/8 nut, but my lock would not latch with this small size nut. Does anyone know if the lock assemblies (18312) are the same for passenger and sedan delivery models? (The green book only lists one 18312 lock assembly with a prefix 01A for 40 up.) If the lock assemblies are the same, should the bolt for the SD have the same size head as the lug nut? If not is the lock assembly for the SD unique to the SD with a much smaller head?

I looked in the 38-39 and 38-40 Chassis parts catalogs and it looks like the lock you need is 48-18312. This lock was used from 1935-1938 on cars as well as the 39 Sedan delivery. It is used with bolt 48-1440. This lock was no longer available in 1950 when the green book was published, so you would not find it in there. I suggest that you look for a 38-39 Chassis parts book and a 38-40 Chassis parts book. I have found that both are necessary when researching 1939 stuff. Tom

The Jan-Feb 2011 V-8 TIMES has an article entitled " Spare Wheel Tire Locks & Lock Bands" which shows the correct bolt 48-1440. The bolt is 2 1/16" long with a 3/8"-24 thread on one end, and a 13/16" double hex on the other. Also shown are two different lock assemblies. One has been tentatively ID'd as 48-18312-B,with its open face (the lock cylinder side). This is believed to fit all 1939 Sedans and Sedan Delivery with inside spare. The closed face lock assembly also shown is very similar, and will work, but it has part number 01A-18312 for 1940 and later. Both lock assemblies will work with bolt 48-1440. Hope this helps. Now I have a question on your 39 Delivery? What does this bolt screw into? The Parts Lists shows some kind of nut. If so, what is it attached to? Thanks. Lincoln.

Thanks for the additional information, Lincoln. Here is what came with the tire clamp. It is a 1/4 by 1 1/4 by 8 1/4 plate (see attached photo). One end is flush with the end with the lock. The lock's bolt goes into the threaded plate on that end. Near the other end a wing nut headed bolt with 3/8-24 thread finishes the attachment to the tire clamp. The wing bolt is 1 1/4 long and looks like the wing nuts on the 37 luggage rack. The plate is first attached to the wood structure by at least one flat headed 1/4 inch by 3 1/4 course threaded bolt with 1 3/8 inches of thread. The plate has a counter sunk hole 1 1/4 inch from the lock end and 1 inch back from the edge adgacent to the edge of the tire clamp. The other hole is also counter sunk but centered and only 1/2 from the opposite end. I do not have a bolt for it but it may have been the same. I suspect that this plate must have been scr*w*d into the wood door framing with some T-nuts.

Thanks, Bob, to pointing to your article. I read it last year and forgot it already. But it is a good reason to keep your old V-8 Times. I made a bolt from two lug nuts and a bolt. It wouldn't pass an inspection but it will work just fine until I find one and now know what to look for.

Thanks for posting a photo of the hardware and the info on how it attaches. I had a open question about a similar locking hardware on the 1936 Ford Sedan Delivery. Your hardware suggests it fits both the 36 and 37. Thanks again. Lincoln.
