Topic: wheel size '40-'48 interchange

fordmerc    -- 02-02-2012 @ 1:29 PM
Are wheels from 1940 thru 1948 interchangeable?
I have 3 (15"), need a 4th for a '40. what other years will fit?

16" rims from 40 through 48 will all interchange.
15" I believe were post WWII on Mercury only. Bolt pattern is the same as Ford.

Perhaps the 3 wheels on the car are wrong: i.e., they should be 16" (?) - which would complicate matters

Indeed! They should all be 16-inch.

40 wheels are 16" and 4" wide at the rim base and if you are going for restoration correctness they should have the right angle on the reverse side of the wheel-like the front of the wheel. 40 and early 41's had this type wheel

Ford pickups from 55-66 used a 15 inch wheel that will fit the early Fords and also hold the stock hubcap.

Maybe just a little broader response to the question.
Yes, all '40-48 Ford/Merc wheels are interchangeable. Are they correct for judging purposes, not really.
The '40 to '47 wheels are generally 16 x 4". In '48 Merc came with the 15 x 4" wheel.
Ford F-1/100 used the 16 x 4" wheel through '54. This wheel is generally the same as the passenger car wheels.
In '55 Ford F-100 had 15 x 5" as standard equipment, 16" was an option.
All F-100's '57-63 had 15 x 5", the rim size was increased to 15 x 5.5 in '64/65.
All of the 5 bolt on 5.5" will fit the '40 Ford cars/1/2 ton trucks. The wider 5.5" wheels would be more desirable for use with radial tires.
The '40 Ford style of hubcap will fit all '40-48 and '57-65 F100 wheels.

Mercury came with 15" wheels in 1942.

The 1940 Ford wheels usually have the date stamped in the web between the mounting holes. Mine also have Ford stamped there.
