Topic: sector shaft bushing

Hello , I've just installed two new brass bushings in the sector shaft housing for the sector shaft to fit into for a 47. My question is do I, now take the housing and shaft to a machine shop for proper fitting of the shaft into the housing, or is this something that one can accomplish using a, brake hone, or maybe a, reamer. Thank you for taking you time to answer this question. Mike

Most, if not all, bushings must be reamed to fit. They close up a bit when they are pressed in place, leaving some material for fitting. At our shop, we use a Sunnen piston pin machine for that purpose. The trick is to get the bushings exactly right so the shaft is easily turned, but with no play. This is particlarly true of steering parts, because any looseness will be magnified by the steering components. Take it to a good machine shop.

In some of the earlier cars the sector shaft is 1.125" diameter. In 36 ford used caged needle bearings in stead of bushings. The sector housing can be opened to 1.375" to remove the bushings and install the bearings. This also allows for the installation of a modern oil seal since these early cars do not have one. Ford only used the bearings in 36
