Topic: 1940 water pump removal

  My right side pump needs rebuilding but I am having trouble removing it. All three bolts came out easily and I have placed a board under the oil pan and jacked it up to take the load off the pump arm. The pump will not come loose from the block and I have driven a sharp screwdriver between them and opened a gap to no avail. Years ago I inatalled a replacement exhaust pipe that has a large diameter where it goes through the frame. I think this pipe is preventing me from removing the load on the pump arm at the motor mount. I have removed pumps before with no problems. Any suggestions?

  You must remove the lower radiator hose. The fourth bolt is inside there. I'd let the motor back down to remove this bolt. I would also recommend replacing it with a stainless steel one upon reassenbly.

  I'd add that it's probably best to use a 6-point socket on that most likely rusty bolt
head inside the water passage.

  DUMB ME! It has been so many years since I changed the last pump that I had forgotten about the bolt directly under the pulley. My faulty old timer's memory thought there were only three. I had already removed the bolt in the water inlet. Thanks fellows for teaching me to count to four!
