Are sound dampening products effective in a convertible?

It depends on the type of sound. I've had convertibles for years, and with the top down, the wind covers the noise. With the top up, the top flaps against the bows on the road, and also renders engine noise, etc, diminished. Most convertibles rattle a bit, thanks to the top mechanism and frame flexing. It is just part of the charm, I think.

I used the foil backed heat and sound insulation in my '41 coupe. I installed it in the doors and roof;everywhere I could. It made a tremendous difference in the heat. I was in southern California at the time and the car was no longer like a blast furnace when I climbed in after a car show etc.
I can't imagine it would make much difference to sound deadening in a convertible though.

like joeB, I glued sound deadning/heat shiel in the doors, under the floor mat, quarter panels, etc, basically anywhere to help noise/heat. I purchased this from Lowe's home improvement, it is two sided foil with entrapped air in bubbles, been in my wagon for over 20 years and in my truck for 2 years with no problems-won't hold moisture, light, easy to work with and not exspensive as some of the other stuff
