Topic: single exhaust with Smitty's

I've heard many people say that flatheads with Smitty's and dual exhaust sound great. I've got to replace my muffler and tail pipe and want to know if anyone else have tried a Smitty's or other glass pack muffler with a single exhaust? Or, should I just keep my car silent?

My 40 conv has duels with smittys and sounds great, not loud just mellow. I also have a 51 with single exhaust with no muffler, just pipe. Its a little louder but sounds good to. My other flatheads are original and quiet.I guess it depends on what you like to hear, duels and smittys are hard to beat.

I have to ask: Why does it seem nearly everyone calls the mufflers "Smitty's"?

Because if you said "Smithys" you would sound like Sylvester the Cat ?

Nice! 37 Coupe...David Letterman may come calling!

That's a good question Mike. I did some checking and the closest I could come is Smithy's that Speedway Motors and a few others sell. Looks like a Smitty muffler is hard to come by.

I like the sound of dual glass packs on the Ford V8, however I used a single one on our 35 Pickup and it sounds great. The pickup featured on the back cover of the V8 Times in the Fall Issue of 2010 always sounds like a V8 should. The single glass pack gives it a strong sound, leaves no doubt that it's a flathead Ford V8.

Smithy's are available at Hot Rod and Custom Supply in Cape Coral, Fl. Also Summit Racing carries them. You can order online. They are $33.95 ea.
And yeah, nothing beats a set of Smithy's on a Flathead!!

I don't think Hot Rod & Custom Supply is still in business and hasn't been for several years.
