Hi, I have just fitted a 40 amp 12volt - earth alternator, as I have converted my Pilot to 12v ,It is new from one of the U.S parts companys.I have connected it strate to the battery to test it.At very high revs in the workshop, I can only get 13.6 volts, I was hopeing for 14.2 at low revs.I have two Optimar batterys connected in searies ,and they read 12.3 volts. Is the alternator voltage dependant on battery charge? Thanks for you help Gordon.

That is typical of one wire alternator conversions. They depend on residual magnetism to come on, while the two wire type are excited by a connection to the ignition switch. This delay is usually made somewhat more pronounced by the fact that old engines don't turn fast enough to produce strong output. New cars use a direct connection to the battery, separate from the output of the alternator to determine the charge rate. Alternator conversions are often disappointing, and we advise our customers accordingly. Have your alternator checked by a shop to be sure it is not faulty.

Yes, it has been my experience that voltage output is dependent on battery condition and accessory load.
