I'm preparing to reinstall my U-joint/transmission in a 1938 60hp coupe and the cork gasket that circles the rear of the U-joint cover comes as a straight piece of cork. I soaked it in motor oil for 3 days and that didn't help its bending to a circle shape and it broke. Any suggestions what to soak it in to make it more plyable? Thanks

If your cork strip gasket is so stiff it won't conform to the groove in the u-joint cap, it is either so old that it is dried out, or made of the wrong material. Obtain a new one, as soaking will not usually make it pliable. A hard gasket won't seal, anyway.

You might want to consider an alternative type of gasket. A man named HotRodJohn is selling a hose-type seal. Some say it's just vacuum hose, but he maintains it's a space-age material. I used his kit recently and liked the way the hose could be compressed into the groove top and bottom. It was a good fit, and I believe it is a better solution than the cork. You can search for him on eBay, or go over to Fordbarn.com and look for several extensive threads on this subject. Good Luck, Henry
