Topic: 35 Tudor Sedan Steering box bracket attachment

The steering box bracket on my 1935 Tudor Sedan has several 5/16 inch rivets. However, the attachment to the bottom of the frame at the front is a bolt/nut. Is that correct or did someone just replace a rivet that disappeared?

  Robert-

I am not sure what you mean by 'several" rivets. There should only be four. Two on the top and two on the bottom. There are no bolts used to attach the bracket to the frame.

Thank you for the response, that is the information I was looking for. Not certain why a bolt was placed in the front lower location unless it was a "repair" a long time ago.

It could be that the steering box was replaced at some time, requiring modification. As technology progressed, later boxes provided a considerable improvement in steering, particularly in the amount of effort required.

I agree, the '37-'48 steering gear was a BIG improvement over the previous boxes. This probably explains why so many '35-'36s now have '37-'40 steering gears.

As an aside, for some reason Ford (famous for his production quirks), broke with the past and produced many early '41s with a bolt-in steering gear mounting plate. Eventually, he went back to the riveted plate similar to what is found in the '42-'48 models. Unfortunately, this oddity has created some judging problems in the past for a few '41 owners.

The steering box mounting bracket on my '35's are all riveted to the frame in four places plus there is one spot weld between the top of the bracket and the top frame rail. I believe that one spot weld may have been used after the bracket and frame holes were aligned to hold it in place prior the riveting operation.
