  Gentlemen,
Do I have to raise the bed to remove the gas tank from a '40 - 41 pickup?

  You should be able to remove the tank without removing the bed. Drain the gas, remove the gas neck ,remove the mounting bolts and disconnect the wire to the sending unit. Push the tank towards the driver's side frame rail and the passenger side of the tank should drop down. Sometimes it's a tight fit, so you may need to use a pry bar to pry the passenger side down.
If you are replacing the tank with a repo tank you should be aware that not all repo tanks are dimensionally the same as the original. You may have to lift up the bed to install the repo tank.

  I will give it a try but there is not much space between the top of the tank and the bottom of the bed. Thanks!
