Topic: 48 KEYS

fla48    -- 12-17-2011 @ 6:06 PM
I purchased my 48 back in 65 and it had the newer style keys. Over the years, with several moves, the car being in and out of storage, etc, I have lost the extra set of keys. I found another set (newer style), but they are to thick to fit into the ignition. Should the 48 have the older style(Hurd type)keys or the newer style keys like in the 49 and newer cars?

You should be using the older style Hurd or Briggs & Stratton Keys as shown below.

I have attached a photo of a set of NOS lock cylinders and Hurd keys for the ignition and door locks of a late 47 and 48 Ford Car.

A good source for keys is Jesser's Classic Keys. The web site is www.jessersclassickeys.com

According to the 41 to 48 Ford book the lock you have a picture of is for the 41-47 cars. The very late 47 and the 48 cars used a single "tear drop" instead of the two raised dots.

42 Wagon I can not answer that question, the lock cylinders and keys were in a box of about 16 NOS locks some early 39 - 47 ignition locks and this pair I have pictured, the ignition is late the door early both are keyed the same as shown with the round key code. Most 46 - 48 changes are not clear or clean most based on remaining inventory so any input would be helpful. I have attached a photo of a lock I am told is station wagon maybe you can give some input. Thanks Dave

Your latest picture shows a dust cover with what I understand to be the tear drop design for the late 47-48 locks. The station wagon front door locks have the long shaft as shown in one of your earlier posts. The tailgate locks are part of the latch handles and at least in 42 had no dust covers. So if you think your latest post is for a station wagon lock, maybe it is but is missing the shaft?
