I'm selling my 1947 Ford sedan coupe. One of the three vin/serial number frame locations is on the top of the D/S frame, between the front cross member and the firewall. I am selling the car to a guy and he wants me to verify the number with the title info. The car had been restored by the previous owner, who evidently blasted the frame and then applied, who knows how many, coats of paint. I know the info is stamped in letters/numbers 1/4 inch high. So that I don't have to remove the paint along the entire length of the top of the frame to find it, I'd like to know if someone can pinpoint the location from the cross member or?. Thanks! Lou Lou G

The front number is supposed to be between the crossmember and the firewall on top of the frame. I say "supposed" because I have never found it on my '47 convertible. There is usually another on top of the rear frame "kick up", but can only be seen if the body is lifted. These numbers were often lightly stamped, and lost to rust and frame cleaning, or omitted at production. The number was also often placed on the front "bell" of the transmission, in some cases, but most cars of that vintage have had more than one "transplant" there. You can try to raise the numbers on the front location by using a Scotchbrite pad, or other fairly mild abrasive, then cleaning the area with an effective solvent, such as "Super Clean". I's say the chances of finding it, if the frame was blasted, are slim. The solution may be a "bonded title", if available where you are, to assure your buyer that the registration is valid.

Lou on my car the number on the frame is directly in line with the front cross member. The only way to find the number will be to remove the paint from the top of the frame starting at the cross member and working your way back. If you think the frame was sand blasted you should probably use some sort of chemical stripper and work very cautiously. Use a strong light at a low angle and maybe you will be able to see the numbers. Ted

Any chance you could contact the previous owner and ask him if the number is there? I can't imagine someone covering up a VIN number. By the way, how do you know your car is the one on your paperwork? The guy buying the car is asking the question you should have asked. Charlie Stephens

On top of the drivers side frame rail real close to where the steering box is riveted. I have used a pencil with soft lead and made rubbings where no numbers are visible and had the numbers show. In fact I have used the rubbings at the DMV

As 42 wagon suggests, check the top left frame rail where the front crossmember intersects. This is "generally" where the number is located. If not found you will have to work your way back to the steering box to look for the number.
