Topic: Needle bounce

I note that when the engine in my '34 is running at higher RPM, the ammeter needle bouces while showing charging. I've often wondered if this bouncing needle is the result of the cutout relay opening and closing or is it caused by the generator brushes? Just curious......

Could be either, or both. It can also be a poor connection in the circuit, or a loose battery cable or ground. Place a voltmeter across each part of the charge circuit and look for a varying reading.

First try something simple, check your belt. It may be slipping with speed. If this is the case a simple adjusting could solve the problem. If the belt seems tight, check to see if it is riding correctly. It should ride slightly higher than the pulley sides. If it needs replacing avoid using a "B" belt. They do not ride correctly in the Ford pulleys and tend to slip with speed.
