Topic: 46 Ford Trunk Locking mechanism

dawhitton    -- 11-22-2011 @ 7:11 AM
Of the two 46's and one 47 that I've owned, I don't remember having to use a trunk key always to operate the handle. I think that once you unlock the trunk you should be able to remove the key. If that is the case, can the lock on my 46 be changed to where you could remove the key once it's unlocked?
Help!

If you take it apart you may be able to see what's wrong with it and fix it. If not, you can get a new handle with lock here: http://macsautoparts.com/early-v8-trunk-handle-with-cylinder-chrome-with-2-keys-ford-11a-7043511/camid/F30/cp/JS0R3CHL1076681/ or here https://secure435.hostgator.com/~dlvry40/ufolder/ShowProducts.php?c=1&s=51&g=395&t=2151&tn=

My original '47 trunk handle had to be unlocked to open it each time. Until the handle was locked, the key couldn't be removed. You could lock the handle and remove the key before shutting the trunk, and by slamming the lid, it would latch. I later replaced the handle with a Drake "new improved" repro, and you don't have to use the key unless you want to lock the handle. Early Drake handles were not good, but the new ones can't be told from the originals and NOS.
