Topic: Overall valve length for a V8?

Can anyone tell me what the overall length of a valve should be for the Ford flathead V8? Are they the same length for all years?

Ford used the same length valves in all 8 cylinder flathead engines thru '53. They will measure at different lengths due to the stem ends being ground to provide correct lifter clearance. If using old valves, and the clearance is too great, the valves should be replaced. We install new valve seats in all rebuilds, which requires new valves. We prefer straight stem stainless valves and the one piece guides with seals, and install new valve springs with adjustable lifters.

I forgot to include that info earlier. The length of the 32-48 valves, both intake and exhaust, is 4.76". The later, 8BA, valves are 4.75". As said earlier, to set the valve clearance, the stems are ground unless adjustable lifters are installed. Clearance for early intakes is .010 to .012. Exhaust is .014 to .016. The lash for the later, 8BA, engines is .013 to .015 for intakes, .017 to .019 for the exhaust. We use a dial indicator to determine that the lifter is exactly on the top of the cam lobe before setting clearance.

  Super, thanks for valve dimensions.
