Topic: info on 1953 full circle horn ring

jsteward    -- 11-13-2011 @ 8:05 AM
I recently purchased a full circle horn ring that states 50th anniversary 1903-1953, I am trying to figure out which vehicle the ring would go to, but the information I am finding is only on half rings, not full rings, was wondering if anyone had any info on these.
thanks

It is probably from a 1953 Ford truck which was built with the "De Luxe" cab. My '53 truck shop manual shows the standard steering wheel, which is in the same shape as your ring. The 1903-1953 "jubilee" emblem was put on lots of Ford vehiches, including the Ford tractors.

Thanks for the reply, I checked out the manual online for the trucks it only shows the half ring horn, not the full ring horn, do you have a pic from the manual by chance?

I would doubt that this horn ring is from a '53 truck. I have a '53 F250 standard not that it would be the same as the deluxe. I looked in the '53 truck parts book and it does not list a horn ring, just the button.

Ironically I am editing a future article on differences of the 1952-54 Ford Passenger Cars. This by member Trevor Poulsen from Australia. He is writing about the Australian Fords and often points out differences between the two. For what's it worth here's what he writes regarding steering wheel horn rings:

"All three models have different horn rings. The 1952 has full round chrome horn rim with it's own center badge. The chrome horn rim on the 1953 only extends about 3/4 of the way around, with a 50th Anniversary badge in the center, while on the 1954s, the chrome horn rim is reduced again, and only fills about 1/3rd of Steering Wheel, with its own Badge in the center."

I have scanned a photo of the standard cab '53 steering wheel. When I worked for a Ford dealer, we had a DeLuxe '53 shop truck, and I seem to remember that it did have a ring, along with some other accessories not usually installed in most trucks. I do recall that my '53 convertible had the half ring, but I don't know if it had the "Jubilee" center button.

Thank you for all the replies, I definitely appreciate it. It seems that the photos posted are the half rings, not the full rings, the one I have is a full ring, which I can not find any definite info about, any other suggestions? I am going to post it on Ebay tonight, I feel that it must be quite rare since I cannot find a full ring photo at all or any mention in any of the original manuals. Check out the posting on ebay if any interested.

If you think that it may be part of an accessory steering wheel, contact Ray Beebe, the Club's 53 Adviser.

I suspect that it may be an after market item as the ring looks much thinner that the stock Ford ring.
