Topic: 34 shift knob

Has anyone had any trouble with the repro 34 century of progress gear shift knob? mine is too small to fit the threads on the stick. I don't know what year my transmission is, but would they have changed size so dramatically if it is later than '34? Would a truck have a larger gear shift lever?

Which repo knob do you have? Is it an early or late repo? I have the one that was reproduced for the 2009 Central Meet in Auburn. It's the Century of Progress knob from the World's Fair. The threads are 5/16X24 which is the same as the threads on the shift lever. To my knowledge the 5/16X24 thread was used on all the V-8 shifters(3 speed) through 39 passenger car.

I bought it from the v8 foundation, as advertised inV8 times...it doesn't even come close to fitting.($26)

I have meet knobs from many V-8 meets plus some stock knobs. They all have the 5/16X24 thread. Get a 5/16 SAE nut and try to put it on your shifter. If it doesn't fit then you have a shifter problem. If it does fit then it's the knob problem and needs to be exchanged.
I'm not sure , but I think the 4 speed and later 3 speeds (42-50 pickup) may have a larger shaft on the shifter.

Thanks folks, They're right at 5/16 and i'm wrong. For some wierd reason my stick is threaded at 3/8. Could be a truck transmission ?

Could be as simple as acquiring a 32-39 passenger stick,
and substituting it for the truck stick that it sounds
like you have. I'm not sure, but I believe the 34 is
straighter, as I know the 37-39's have quite an "S"
curve. I believe the lower "selector" part below the
pivot ball is the same. Be careful you don't drop the
little locating pin in the hole when you pull the stick
out.

  It's not s shaped, it's just like a '34 stick should be...really strange isn't it?

It would be easy enough to retap the threads to 5/16.

I might retap and use 34 special knob or go back to my 1930's beer tap knob!
