I have the end plate off my '38 steering gear and the brass tube is broken cleanly even with the plate. I have removed the flange from the plate and have the tube inserted in the hole. Would someone who has experienced all the "repairs" please guide me to the most effective one? The tube fits snugly in the steering rod so I'm thinking the tube must be absolutely square with the plate. How can this thin tube ever be effective for any period of time? It seems like any tolerance in the shaft bearing would break the tube again. Please, someone allay my doubts about making a lasting repair. Does anyone reproduce this plate/tube assembly? Thanks for any advice. Gene

Thanks, Kube. I'm afraid my soldering skills aren't honed well enough for me to try it, and my friendly welding shop is closed on Fridays. Being the impatient person I am, I applied JB Weld and replaced it on the box to align the tube, then carefully removed it to dry. I'll give it the test of fire tomorrow.

If you can put a pic up even of the bottom plate you removed i have a NOS tube but dont know what yr it is. and cant do pics of what i got. It is for sale. ken ct. Here or on the Ford Barn.

Hi Ken, it measures about .418 OD and the walls measure about .015. The remaining piece is 6 1/4" and about 3/8" was the part that stayed with the plate. These are from a dial caliper, so are probably off some. Can you tell from those measurements it it is close to your part?
