Topic: Motor Oil

Have used Classic Car 15-40 motor oil in my restored stock 47 Ford for a couple years, and it works fine. Am in process of restoring 53 sunliner, and wondering if this oil with it's additives is worth the money? Does it really have some benefit for cars that are driven less than say 500 mile per year? Any experienced opinions are welcome.

John, it's not how many miles are driven, it's how well your engine is lubricated during the milies it does run.

In my opinion, the investment in good oil will help protect the investment in a good Ford. Don't try getting all the miles you can get from the oil either, as that defeats your purpose!

Any good detergent motor oil meeting API standards will lubricate and protect your engine adequately. The main thing to remember is to change it every spring and fall if you are in the area of the country where you have to store your car for the winter. In other areas, every 3 months is a good guideline.

A lot of us use 20w 50, but 10w 30 will work also.

Short trip driving, which describes most old car usage, is considered to be "severe service" due to the moisture and unburned fuel that accumulates from failure to run the engine at operating temperature long enough to burn off these contaminants. I agree that changing oil at least in the spring and fall, regardless of mileage, is desirable. As often said, "oil is cheaper than engines".
