Most construction rental places have them available by the hour.

We often use the block and jack method. Place a floor jack under the center of the spring. Raise the car and place a wooden block, preferably a 4 by 4, under one end of the spring, and carefully lower the jack until you can get the bars on one side of the shackle, then repeat on the other side. We used this trick well before there was a Portapower. The dealership where I worked did the same, but used a chain hoist rather than a jack. When we removed shackles, we inserted a pipe with flattened ends to hold it in the extended position.

I've used the block & jack method, but because my wagon has such a heavy spring, I would
have to load about 400 lbs of cement in the back to make the spring flatten out. Another time, I borrowed a proper spring spreader from a Ford dealership (fat chance doing that today), and I finally ended up making my own out of structural tubing, 1" all-thread and
some custom made wedges for the ends. Why so many times? I had a large motor and a lead foot, which required frequent axle replacement. Since my high school friends had similar
traits, my homemade spring-spreader got loaned out a lot on Saturdays after rambunctious
Friday nights.

If you don't have a half-ton pickup or wagon, it's not that hard. Just be careful!
