Topic: Correct LH exhaust for 48 Ford

juergen    -- 10-10-2011 @ 11:30 AM
I have two LH exhaust manifolds which I can't identify. I know they are not 32-41 or 49-53. One may be 21A-9431 which the green book lists as for 42-47 Fords. In contrast 21A-9430 is listed as a RH manifold for 42-48 Ford cars. So what is the correct part number for a LH 48 Ford exhaust manifold?

One of my unknown LH manifolds has both exhaust pipe studs going into the manifold while the other has the front stud on the flange and doesn't enter the manifold. It's esit point is also a little more forward than the first.

The 42-28 V-8 Restoration Guide doesn't have pictures of the manifolds. So does anyone know if either one can or cannot be the 21A-9430 or if it is for a 48?

The green book listing seems to be ambigous, and lists the LH and RH exhaust manifolds under the same 21A category, as you note. It may help if you can post a photo of the two manifolds. I suspect that the part number reflects that exhaust manifolds were sold as a set, rather than individual pieces. That is the way they are listed in such places as the C&G catalog.

The first picture shows three LH exhaust manifolds. The one on top is for 37-41. I believe one of the others is the 21A manifold. Picture 2 shows the bottom one has both the exhaust pipe studs not entering the manifold. Picture 3 shows that the center one has the rear stud entering the manifold. Picture 4 shows that for the 78A manifold, both studs enter the exhaust manifold.

I believe that the correct P/N for the 48 Foed LH exhaust manifold is 21A-9431. The 39-48 Mercury parts catalog list that as the correct manifold for the 42-48 Mercury and all exhaust parts have the same P/N as the Ford parts.

The only change shown for 1948 is the muffler outlet bracket and clamps.

I believe that the center manifold in the 3 manifold photo may be a truck manifold for 48-52. The outlet is closer to the front of the engine than the earlier manifolds and it looks similar to the drawings in the truck part catalog.

Thank you two for getting this cleared up for me.

Yes, the middle one is a 48-52 truck exhaust manifold. No doubt on that.
