Topic: Generator ID

I have a 6 volt generator stamped "Ford Q10". Years ago I recall seeing a listing of the codes used on the generators by Ford but have not been able to locate it. Does anyone know what the Q10 code means? Or where I can find the listing of codes?

Thanks!

The '10' is October without question. I am not certain about the 'Q'. I can tell you with certainty that 1939 Ford used the letter 'T' and 1940, the letter 'U'.
If Ford went in sequential order, than the 'Q' would indicate 1936.

I have the generator listings from 1933-1947, and nowhere does the Letter "Q" appear. This includes all models, 4,6 and 8 cylinders, including tractors and Lincolns. I'd assume that you have an aftermarket generator bearing the index of the manufacturer, indicating that it was designed for a Ford replacement.

  Interesting...
Kubes- do you mean the letter T (1939) or U (1940) was stamped on the generator? BTW, the Ford stamp on my generator is in Ford script, so I'm sure it was not an aftermarket product.

When I purchased the generator many years ago, the fellow said it was off a 36 Ford.

It could be a rebuilt Ford unit, which would account for the script, with a code from the rebuilder. We often see odd stamps on "genuine" rebuilt parts. Lots of places, such as Western Auto carried rebuilt parts such as starters, generators, etc.

  6lucky13,
Ford did in fact stamp their generator bodies. However, I have been told that this did not always happen.
The INTENT was to stamp all of them.
Along with the date code(s), the Ford script would also appear.
Sorting through my used generators I have come upon two units with "Q" stamped in them. The stampings appear consistent with Ford's placement and method .
That being noted, I'd hazard to say they are genuine (OEM)(authentic - NOT rebuilt)Ford units. However, I obviously can't be 100% certain they were not rebuilt at some point in the very distant past.

Q is the year code for 36 and the month is 10. So at least the body of the generator is late 36.
