Topic: Fordomatic question?

Does anyone know if a '51 Mercomatic transmission will fit to replace the Fordomatic trans in my '51 Ford Victoria? Do I have to change anything, or modify anything? Thanks, Karl.

You shouldn't have a problem mating the transmission to the engine, but it is likely that the drive shaft will need to be modified due to the difference in wheelbase. Before you start, carefully measure the distance between the front of the converter housing to the rear transmission mounts to be sure the rear crossmember is in the right place.

Mabe I'm missing something here. If the transmission is the same, why wouldn't the drive shaft from the Ford work with the Merc-o-Matic in the Ford?

There are many differences in the chassis for the Mercury and Ford in 1949-1951. I don't know for sure if they are interchangeable, but I doubt that they are just a bolt in replacement.

If someone who has tried to make this change doesn't chime in, I would measure from the bell housing to the transmission mounts and also check the type of mounting to make sure that it is compatible.

I don't have the specs in front of me, but more often than not, the wheelbase on the Mercs is bit longer than Ford, which would require a different driveshaft. It is also possible that the extension housing (the tail of the transmission) is different. I'd consult either an automatic transmission shop or a good salvage yard, where they may have an interchange manual.
