Topic: 1948 Ford guages

Hi! I'm putting my 48 Ford 2dr.Super Deluxe back together after being completely torn down 33 years ago by someone else. One question I have is the coolant guage needle is almost on H. It's not in the car. Will it go back to C when I put it back in and turn the key on or will I need a new guage. Also the charging guage doesn't have screws to wire to. What goes on the back of that guage? If you know I would appreciate the help and Im sure I will have more questions. Thanks for any help.

The ammeter does not have terminals. The wire from the generator or alternator just lays in a trough on the back of the meter. It senses the curent and indicates that way. Depending on the direction of curent flow will deflect the meter. If it shows discharge when it should be charging just reverse the direction of thw wire.

The temperature gauge needle will drop down when the ignition is turned on. The sending units on the engine provide a resistive circuit, based on the temperature of each side. The generator wire through the 'loop' on the back of the battery gauge should be installed correctly the first time, rather than reversing it later. It's a really heavy wire, and the gauge is fragile. The harness I used did not come with the battery wire terminal soldered on prior to installation. It came with the harness, but was soldered on after the wire was routed through the gauge, and attached to the breaker. I took a bunch of pictures of the dash wiring before replacing it all on my ’47 Tudor. Send me an email if you would like them for reference.
