When Ford built it's first 3-window coupe in 1932 it was designed to mimic the style of a Lincoln, which denoted luxury. I believe the concept was revived in 35-36 to emphasize that 5-window coupes denoted practicality in the heart of the depression, and were targeted to be perceived to be a better "value". The Lincolnesque 3-window was designed to appeal to those who valued style over substance, but couldn't afford the cost of a Lincoln. I have always felt that the 3-windows were more "stylish", and my generation of Hot Rodders in the 50's generally favored the style over the 5-window as well. I don't think the enthusiasts in the 50's really cared about the appellation "Standard" or "Deluxe", but rather valued the appearance. My generation had some favorites, and at least in SoCal, the 36-3 window was favored over the 35. I had, and still have, a 38 Deluxe, which at the time was considered an Ugly Duckling. I have no good documentation on this, it's just an opinion.
