Topic: '39 Deluxe Headlight Bucket Question

  Howdy, boys:
Can somebody tell me what color the inside of '39 headlight buckets were originally? I'm guessing black, but wouldn't silver reflect more light forward through the glass lens? If so, is silver the way to go for a "driver"?
Much obliged,
Mike

Howdy Mike, Welcome to the Forum. There seems to be a minor discussion on whether the buckets were originally silver or black. My '38 is a driver as is your '39, and I believe my lights are brighter due to the aluminum foil I put in. This way, they can easily be returned to black, as my original buckets were.

May I suggest a great source of answers for you and your '39: This website has the '38-'39 Ford Book for sale, and but for the afore mentioned bucket color question, has more answers than questions you can think up. Use the link below:

Thanks. That is helpful information. I was an EFV8 member from about 1967 through about 1980-81. It is good to be back and find the same helpful spirit still flourishing after all these years. Mike

I have NOS 39 buckets that I bought from Joblot in 1971 when Ray ran the place and they are black. Tom had a good idea for reflective increase...spray the inside with rattle can chrome paint. I did my 39 tail light buckets and the reflective increase was amazing.

Originally the insides of the 39 buckets were intended to be sprayed silver.
NOS buckets were often service replacement parts and as such, in high probability were not painted.
Whether or not all buckets (factory installed)received this silver paint will always be debatable.
What is not debatable is Ford's intention to paint the insides silver.
