Does anyone know what the letter S stamped on the rear diff. means. I was looking for the 2 numbers to tell what ratio I have 3:54, 3:78 or 4:11. the only thing on it was a letter S

Not all rear axles have the ratio numbers stamped on the "web", or they may be stamped very lightly, and hard to read. The ratio would be expressed as a set of three numbers. For instance, a 3-78 would be shown as 349, a common ratio of 1948. See the extensive discussion of the topic in the 1940 section of this Forum. Maybe it is just me but I have never rebuilt a rear end without changing the ratio (always higher). I must admit I have only done a few over my lifetime. I don't think I would trust the numbers because they would probably not be changed. If the speedometer is correct what about the numbers on the speedometer gear or roll the car and count the revolutions. Charlie Stephens
