Topic: How tight should a fan belt be

What do you guys use as a rule in how tight to get a fan belt. The book say’s you should be able to push it in 1 inch. But it does not say how much force to use. What about getting it tight enough that you can turn the blade of the fan by hand but it takes quite a bit of effort.

We tighten fan and water pump belts enough so that it take a strong push to get 3/4 to 1 inch of movement in the middle of the belt between pulleys. This is for the wide belts. The narrow belts in the later cars should be a bit tighter. That is why they went to ball bearings in the pumps instead of the bushings. The really important fact about V belts is to get the correct belt for the job. Belts that are too narrow will bottom on the pulleys, and belts that are too wide will not get full contact on the sides, where the real work is done. We have been using the "cogged" belts, as they conform to pulleys somewhat better than the solid belts. Too tight belts will damage the fan hub and/or the generator bearings, if that is your fan mount. Usually, if you can slip the belt by turning the fan blades, it isn't tight enough.
