On our run from Alberta to the Central National Meet in Auburn, which will start on either the 18th or 19th of August, can anyone advise what the more interesting sightseeing stops might be if we have time to visit them ? The planned route includes crossing into the USA at North Portal, North Dakota and heading east through that state, then in a more or less southeasterly direction across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois and into Indiana. Does anyone know of areas with highway construction that ought to be avoided ?

Stop in Milwaukie, Wis. and visit the Harley-Davidson museum. It's a great museum. Have lunch in the cafeteria. The tables are made of steel plate and the the seats are big metal beams. If the Harley plant is running you can also get a tour of the assembly line. Also you should visit the Indianapolis Speedway museum. it's about 2 hours south of Auburn. If you haven't been there it's a must see.

Once in MN -- stop at the Twin Cities Assembly plant -- see it before it closes this Dec. There have been tours on Thursdays. Also, there are many interesting things to see in the Wisconsin Dells. If your young at heart, spend the night and enjoy a relaxing time floating in one of the many water parks. And since it was mention Milwaukee has a brewery or two, well worth the free refreshment. Leaving Milwaukee, find US 41 and take it toward Chicago for an interesting drive along Lake Michigan. If Chicago is not for you, then you could book on the ferry across the lake. Relaxing time, and if you are driving an old V-8, they will even let you drive it on. Once by Chicago (if you dont do the ferry) find US 30 - and travel the Lincoln Highway thru IL and IN...many of the small towns are a hoot and the road is well maintained and in many places 4 lane.

I should point out -- that Milwaukee Harley Davidson does not build motorcycles in Milwaukee. The plant that I toured 5 years ago only built engines. Which brings up the question -- they were building so many engines, how come there was a waiting list for bikes? This message was edited by nelsb01 on 8-11-11 @ 10:08 PM

Grant, I-80 / I-94 will be under construction at the I-65 interchange until August 20. I went thru Chicago twice last month, and both times there were long backups on I-80, west of Joliet, and as Tom indicated, another where I-65 meets 94 in Indiana. They were both close to an hour, and in very high temps. I wouldn't want to drive a vintage car in those spots. They were tough days, even in the AC comfort of my modern ride. If you can avoid those areas, I'd do it.

Thanks, guys. I do sincerely appreciate your warnings about ongoing construction. We will make a point of staying totally away from those areas.
