Some pics in the green book show the long shoe as the rear shoe and pics on the Ford techno site show the other way . Where does the long shoe go front or back? \41-42 Ford car

You didn't say what year but assuming it is a '42, the long shoe goes forward, the shorter shoe to the back. Tom

The primary or long shoe always goes toward the front of the car.

Supereal: Question: I know the long shoe goes to the front on pre 48 models but on the shoebox era cars doesn't the long shoe go to the rear to take advantage of the leverage from the front shoe? Thanks for your participation in the forum problem solving for our members and V8 enthusiasts.

The long shoe goes on the front with fixed anchor brake systems. The short shoe goes on the front with the self energizing brake systems. Pre 1949 Ford cars have a fixed anchor, while the later Fords have the seld energizing brakes. The rear shoe provides very little braking action on the fixed anchor brakes when going forward, so it should be shorter. In the self energizing brake system, the front shoe forces the lower end of the shoes toward the back and the back shoe provides the most braking action. Tom

As Tom explains, the "Lockheed" type has a fixed anchor, while the "Bendix" has the floating shoes, the kind with the "star" wheel adjuster. That said, most of the shoes for the later style brakes have equal length shoes, anyway. If the short shoe is put on the front side of the earlier type, braking power is considerably reduced. That is why the piston size in the wheel cylinders is different, favoring the long front shoe with the larger piston. This message was edited by supereal on 8-5-11 @ 2:42 PM

Mystery solved Long shoes on front. The question was raised because the red Ford parts book page 19( Ford and Mercury wholesale catalog dated Jan 1945 ) and the Green Bible page 26 shows the other way around.

The red parts book shows the front and rear brakes looking at the right side of the car and the long shoe is toward the front as is the larger size piston. Tom
