Topic: Drive-line 1935 vs 1937

Hardie    -- 07-29-2011 @ 4:20 AM
  Greetings:
My '35's engine is quickly going sour, in mid-season no less. I've found a fairly fresh '37 engine/ transmission removed from a "restoration now hot-rod project". This engine can be installed as is and carry me through the rest of the summer while I address my original engine. I need to know what differences I'll encounter in the 1937 85 hp drive-line before I buy it and start to pull out the '35's. All and any insight is appreciated. Thanks: Mac

Mac

  You may want to install the 35 intake on the 37 to keep the generator/fan height correct;
you will also need to use your 35 exhaust manifolds on the 37. Radiator hoses will need to be re-worked so as to not put a strain on the top radiator outlets. You should be able to use your 35 motor mount engine brackets by bolting them to the provided threaded holes just inboard of the 37 water pumps. I'm sure there are a few items I've missed, but these are the main areas of concern that come to mind.

Thanks for the prompt reply. Let the acquisition begin.

  You might also consider putting a set of the block off plates on the front of the '37 engine where the water pumps mount. These were a part available from Ford to enable the engine to be used as a replacement for the earlier engines. If you can't find a set of the block off plates they should be easy to make using the gasket as a pattern. You can then use your '35 heads (check for piston clearance, some were flat and some were domed but I don't believe this will be a problem) and water pumps (as well as the '35 intake manifold). A person would have to look close to know that you did not have the correct engine. When this engine wears out put the rebuilt '35 back in.

  I just wanted to be sure you saw my reply to your post. I am considering doing this on my '32.

  The '37 engine will fit right into your '35 using either method mentioned above. If you decide to put the '37 engine in using the '37 heads and water pumps there are standard Gates upper hoses available from NAPA that have all the correct angles, bends and ID required to fit right in place.
Using the other method of block off plates, '35 front motor mounts, and heads with water pumps, the biggest issue may be getting 21 stud heads that have combustion chambers that match the top of the pistons that are in the '37 engine. I believe the '37 pumps do a better job of moving coolant in the block than the 32-'36 style pumps, especially if you are using the Skip Haney high flow pumps. I would also use your '35 transmission unless the gears, spacers, and bearings are in better condition in the '37 transmission.

  I think JM put it well. Charlie's idea will result in a little more "authentic" installation, but I don't think the head swap is worth the trouble, especially if you are going to rebuild your 35 motor. JM has the NAPA numbers for the reverse-bend top hoses, if you PM him. JM's idea of using a known-good transmission is also a great suggestion, plus you will have a stock-appearing shift lever instead of the "swan-neck" 37 shifter. I'm not positive on this, but I believe that if you decide to use the 37 box, the 35 shift lever should interchange. Just don't lose the little round pin that
locates the shift lever into the gearbox (ask me how I know!)

  Ford changed the working end of the shifter levers in 1936, so he will not be able to swap the lever from his 35 trans into the shift tower of a 37 trans. They are different lengths. No problem using the 35 trans with the 37 engine of course....... Mac VP

  Thank You for clarifying this, Mr. Van Pelt! Question; are the shift forks compatible, wherein he could simply swap out the tops?
