There are several ways to set those plugs. One way is to take a cold chisel that fits the recess and round the outer corners. It is also possible to set the plugs with a star drill of the type used to drill concrete. Again, the edges of the drill must be ground to fit the recess. If the holes are damaged in any way, we tap them to receieve a plug, which is coated with a sealer. We do rebalance the crankshaft. If you are unsure of exactly how to install the plugs, it is a good idea to have a machine shop do it for you, as these plugs hold the main oil pressure, and if any one of them comes loose, it is likely the engine will be destroyed. Most old engines do need to have the plugs removed so the oil passages can thoroughly cleaned. We scrub them with a bore brush and blow the debris out with compressed air to be sure none remain that could cause bearing failure.
