Restoring a 38 coupe, V-60, and I just checked the 5 rims that came on the car when I purchased it in 1964. All 5 are KH and the dates are as follows: 1-3-38 1-3-38 12-6-37 2-7-38 12-6 From what I can tell from the 38/39 Ford Book, my car was built in March, 1938 so the first 4 rims could be original. Can anyone tell me what the 12 - 6 would be? There is no indication what-so-ever that a year stamp was present and it has the same Ford KH marking as the rest of the rims. Second question, the Ford book states my rims should be 16 x 3 1/2. Is the 3 1/2 the width of the rim where the tire is mounted? All mine seem to be wider than 3 1/2. Thanks

John, I've never measured them, but would guess that the dimension is the ID of the rim. Re the rim with the missing year, that particular rim was the one that the date stamper was stamping at the very moment the lunch whistle sounded! Speculation about the likelihood of differently dated rims on the same car: Gary Mallast, who has done the research and wrote the book, believes that all 5 tires were delivered to the assembly line from the same point of delivery, the spare being carried along with the frame until the body was installed, and spare mounted at that point. This scenario doesn't make sense to me, though. I can't picture the extra baggage traveling with the frame until it is needed, as virtually everything else on the assembly line is furnished only at the point of it being installed. Either scenario you choose, I believe it to be very unlikely that more than two different dates would be present on one car as delivered from the factory. The V-8 60 cars did come with the 16X3.5 inch rim. The width is measured where the tire mounts up(drop portion of the rim). If you measure a 3.5 rim from outside to outside you should come up with about 4 inches. The 60 cars came with 5.50X16 tires. This message was edited by trjford8 on 7-5-11 @ 6:48 AM

Thanks Alan for the reply. Question, the spare tire that was in the car when purchased (1964) was a new Firestone 600x16 nylon tire. It still has the nubs on the rubber and the car has been in storage since 1968. I will be purchasing new tires for my restoration and assume I should purchase five tires and not use this NORS tire for a spare seeing its age. Question, in Concourse judging, do they check rim dates (all 5?)and would mine pass? Thanks again and looking forward to Saratoga.

John, the dates of your rims will not be an issue, I can assure you. Rim and tire size will certainly be an issue. Your 47+ year old spare tire will be a safety issue if it ever mounts up, due mainly to age, but also to the wrong tire for the 3.5" rim. Alan
