Can any one tell me, is a Melling M-19 oil pump a 50 lb or 80 lb oil pump with regard to the needed oil pressure senging unit? Thanks for the help.

The Melling M-19 is the 50 lb op and the M-15 is the 80 lb op. I would suggest using the M-19 for most engine builds. The M-15 is mainly used in racing engines that have greater bearing clearances. JM

The 50# pump is largely extinct. The 80# pump will work fine. If you have a problem with the change, install a mechanical gauge and correlate the difference with the dash gauge, or leave the mechanical gauge in place. In most cases, you can't have too much oil pressure. The relief valve in the front of the valve chamber will make up the difference.

if you are installing the 80lb pump you will need to use the pickup tube that goes with it,no knowing what year ENGINE you are installing the pump in,, the 80 is the way to go,you never have enough oil pressure. I use one in my 37 85hp for many years. with no problems. except more oil pressure my 3 cents 37RAGTOPMAN

cvford35, I believe I gave you some wrong information in my earlier post. I have done some further reading/checking on oil pumps and apparently the Melling M-19 pump is an 80 lb pump and you should use an 80 lb sending unit with this pump. The M-15 pump is also an 80 lb pump BUT it is a higher volume pump that is advertised to deliver 25% more volume than the M-19. The M-15 pump is recommended for extreme competition engines. Also, contrary to some statements made by others on this thread...it is possible to have too much oil pressure and too much oil pressure can/will damage bearings. Relief valves can malfunction on their own or due to modifications such as stretching/shimming springs, etc. JM This message was edited by JM on 7-3-11 @ 7:01 AM
