Topic: 1948 Flathead in a 1935 Ford

  I recently purchased a 1948 flathead engine. I started taking it apart. Found some mice had made it ito a home. Anyway I plan to rebuild this engine and put it in my 1935 Ford. I think I have read that I will need to use a truck oilpan and truck water pumps. Is there anything else that I will need to make this an easy swap? I am not in a hurry since this will be my first flathead rebuild. I want to do it right.

  Dicky, I have a '46-'48 59a engine going into a '35 Ford tudor sedan. I have also done this swap many years ago (1960) on a '35 3W coupe. There is no need for truck water pumps or a truck oil pan. '37-'48 type water pumps work just fine. A stock '35-'48 oil pan will also work well. now if you were putting a later 8ba engine in your '35 you may need some of the things you mentioned.

Note that the hose shown in some of these pictures is available at NAPA and other auto parts stores as a standard Gates part number. It will fit perfectly from the center outlet heads on a '37-'48 engine to a stock '35/'36 passenger car radiator. If you want to use that hose I can provide the part number.

  I have a 35 Deluxe Tudor with a 59AB block. The engine was in the car when I bought it many years ago, but I am certain that it has the original oil pan and water pumps. It bolts right up to the original 35 tranny. It also assumes that you will be using the correct distributor, coil and intake manifold for the 59AB engine. The motor mounts line up correctly on the front cross member and there is plenty of clearance for the tie rod and drag link. The only issue that I am aware of is you will have to find non stock upper radiator hoses to accomadate the center head coolant outlets. Also, there in not much clearance between the exhaust manifold and steering box. Hope this helps.

  You don't need the truck clutch housing unless you are installing an 8BA ('49 and later) engine and that will require the 8RT truck water pumps, as well. The rest is straight forward as indicated by the above posts.

  One other thing about this engine I have a question about. The oil pan hae about a 2 inch drain plug in it. Is this a car or truck engine? What is the difference between the two?

  The 2" oil drain plug is a car oil pan. I don't know the difference between a car and truck oil pan. Do you have a fitting on the dip stick boss for the oil filter return line?

  I have a 49 type engine with a rear sump bell housing and a large plate bolted to the bottom of the pan. Supposedly this was from a military vehicle - could be since it has a tag showing that was rebuilt on some base somewhere.

will this fit on my '34?

  OK, sorry for the delay. I just logged on here and saw these requests.
For anyone putting a '37 to '48 Ford Flathead (using center outlet heads) into a '35/'36 Ford passenger car or light comm. vehicle (except for pu's), try a pair of Gates #21253 (NAPA #NBH 7964) for the upper radiator hoses. They have a 2" ID at one end and 1-3/4" ID at the other end with all the correct angles. They fit perfectly and eliminate the need to use four short hoses and two tubes or a long flex hose which could put undue strain on the radiator inlet tubes. Also, I have heard that '49 to '53 p/n 8BA-8286-A will work for the lower hoses on this same engine swap. I have not personally tried this so I don't know how well this actually works.

  Carguy, you might be better off starting a completely new post rather than jump in here on this one. A '49 engine would be an 8ba/8rt and many things would be different to get that engine into a '34. JMO
