here's a good one for everybody....how is does it so happen that the mileage does not change but the mile per hour works and is fairly accurate? tenths work but nothing else will change.

The miles and tenths, etc. are on drums numbered 0 thru 9. A gear drives the tenths drum and every time it completes a circle it should trip the miles drum and cause it to move up one mile. Somehow the trip mechanism has come loose inside the drum. The set of drums is an assembly that is held in with a spring clip and is very easy to remove, once you get the speedometer out of the car. I recently replaced the drum assembly in a '46 and it was an easy task. Not sure about taking the drum assembly apart. Maybe someone else knows how to do that.
