Does anyone reccomend replacing the studs when changing head gasketS ? I suspected a compression leak and thought the gasket was the cause. Thanks for any help ! You guys are a great resource !

In a perfect world, you would replace the studs if they showed any signs of corrosion. In this world, I would not replace them unless I was rebuilding the engine or they are leaking coolant. The studs are likely to be rusted in place and may break when trying to remove them. It is probably a good idea to just get a thread chaser die and clean the threads for the head nuts so you will get an accurate torque on the nuts. Tom

Why do you suspect a compression leak? Did you do a dry/wet compression test, or a blowdown test? Almost always a head gasket leak will produce overheating, so if that isn't the case, I'd delay pulling the heads until you confirm the cause. Old cast iron blocks can have very fragile threads and must be carefully chased with the proper tool. A couple of months ago we finished an 8BA rebuild and had a "wet" head bolt. We usually install ARP self locking bolts or studs to minimize damage, but that one took some doing to seal.
