Topic: Battery Terminal Fit on Optima

Steves46    -- 06-24-2011 @ 9:53 AM
I received my new Optima 6 volt for my 46 Coupe and to my suprise, the battery cable terminals are a bit small and do not want to fit flush on the battery post. After applying vasolene on the posts I managed to get about 3/4 of the terminal on; is that good enough or should I find a spreader tool? As always, thanks for the guidance.

I haven't had that problem with the Optima. I'd loosen or remove the terminal bolt and spread the terminal with a large screwdriver so it will cover the battery pole. If the terminal fit a battery before, it should now.

Steve, the posts on your old battery were probably worn down some from cleaning with a wire brush tool. The battery cable terminals are probably clamped down to fit worn battery posts. Do what Super suggested to open up the cable clamps and clean them with a wire brush. After doing that the cables should fit properly.

Steve, as with all electrical connections, dialectric grease prevents oxidation, preserving the integrity of the connection. Vaseline will do the same thing, but underhood temperatures will melt vaseline away, leaving the connection exposed.

Thanks for the inputs. After carefully using a large screwdriver, I was able to widen the terminals for a nice flush fit.

Even if you leave the battery connections exposed, an Optima battery will not corrode like a regular car battery.
