I plan to replace my 36 Ford steering box and shaft . After I remove all the necessary items ,including the pitman arm ,does anyone know if the steering box and shaft will come out of the bottom of the car as one unit? I do not want to come out the floorboards it would be a hassle for me. I hope I made my question clear. Thanks.

Unless you have an open car, it is likely that the box and shaft will have to come out from the bottom, anyway, due to lack of clearance. The hitch is that the car has to be raised high to do it.

Bob-
The only way to remove a '36 steering assembly from below is to first remove the steering wheel. However, to do this you need to remove the light rod to get the steering wheel off. Which means that the column must be dropped to gain enough room to pull the light rod out of the steering shaft. To drop the column you must remove the left floorboard. And, as I understand it, that is what Dansford wants to avoid. I don't how he can avoid it. The upshot, removing the gear on a '36 is an "inside job."

Thanks Bob and Tom,I will remove all that has to be taken apart it has to be painted anyway.My main concern is can I maneuver the steering box and shaft between the front axle and the tie rod if I have the height? I may have to remove the tie rod to get it out. Thanks again to both of you.dansford

You should remove the tierod for the extra clearance. You would only need to disconnect the driver's side to move it out of the way.
