Topic: 38 Floorboard Preservative?

Restoring a 38 and the Ford Book quotes a "black preservative was put on floorboards and other wood components of the vehicle like the tool box covers and spare tire shelf. Any recommendations what to use that will look authentic and do the job?

I used Eastwood's rust encapsulator thinned out 5 to 1

I recall that I read somewhere that Ford used varnish colored with lampblack. You might call Roy Nacewicz and see what he recommends. He is making florboards.

It is likely that the floorboards were coated with a common substance such as coal tar, which was cheap and readily available. It was banned some time ago as a "carcinogen", as was creosote. We have used POR black primer for that purpose. It is expensive, but provides a uniform flat black appearance.

I restored my '34 pickup and used a black oil based stain on my floor board. Also used same stain on the wooden sub-floor on the pickup bed. Ford had used a "black type stain" in the '30's so I used an oil based black stain.

I agree with Tom. Roy makes a high quality product, and I believe he can either supply the correct preservative, or advise on a product available locally.
