Topic: Mag wheels for a '36 slant

End goal here is to get mags and new, wide tires on my '36 slant. Problem: the car was converted to juice brakes by a previous owner and currently uses wheels with the wide pattern from what I've been told was a '39 Ford. Current tires are 6.00x16. Not exactly a wide choice of wheels/tires for that bolt pattern. Recently I've heard that I can directly substitute brake drums from a '40 Ford for those on the car now and get a 5 1/2" bolt pattern. This should make finding mags a lot easier. Is it true that the '40 drums are a direct replacement for the wide pattern drums I have now? Also, should I expect to have clearance problems using a modern wide tire?

The 40 drums will work on your car. If you are using stock shocks and go to a wider wheel you will encounter a problem depending on the inside offset of the wheel. If the wheel has too much offset to the inside the shock arms will come in contact with the tire and damage the tire. I bought a 39 coupe years ago in L.A. and drove it home(about 450 miles). The car had been converted to 40 drums and used 15" Ford pickup wheels that were 5 1/2" wide. When I go home I found that the shock arms had cut a groove on the inside of each rear tire. With the car sitting in a static position the arms just cleared the tires. When the car apparently went into a turn and leaned slightly the arms cut into the tires. Needless to say I had to buy two new tires and I went to a narrower wheel.
