Topic: 1937-39-39 Ford Tube Axle

I recently read the two EFV-8 Publications "The 1937 Ford Book" and Gary Mallast's excellent "The 1938-1939 Ford Book". I am extremely happy with both books.

Both books address details concerning the production of 1937-38-39 Ford cars with front tube axles, providing detail about when the axles were introduced to regualar production and the numbers of cars equipped.

The questions not answered by the two books : why did Ford produce two types of axles and equip some cars with them and not others? Why did FoMoCo need to produce two different front axles for passenger cars during this time (37-39) but not during other model years?

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Tony, You pose a very good question. There has been well founded speculation that the tube axle was made specifically for the 60hp Ford. The engine and the axle coincidentally began and ended during the same period. This has not been proven, as original fords have been found having both the 85hp engine and tube axles.

Another believable explanation would be that Ford was trying to save money, which the tube axle apparently did not.

The real truth may lie somewhere in between.
