Topic: Rear shock options

I recently bought a '38 club coupe that is mostly original, but modified enough (15" wheels, hydraulic brakes, etc) that I don't feel obligated to put original shocks on the back. The shocks were missing completely and I'm asking for feedback or experience about what I should install, original or aftermarket tube shocks. The rear is at stock height. I expect varying opinions, but vendor sources and your experience with their products would be much appreciated.

A 38 club coupe is a fairly rare car. If you check around you will get varying opinions. From my standpoint I prefer the aftermarket tube shocks. You can use the brackets from a 48 ford passenger car that will work on your 38. You can also buy an aftermarket kit from C and G Parts or Bob Drake. Others have advised that they have used the Delco-Lovejoy(General Motors) shocks with the Ford adapters. Those are a lever type shock that can be easily rebuilt with an inexpensive rebuild kit found on e-Bay.

Drake's kit has the lower bracket that appears to weld to the axle housing, I'd prefer not to do that. C & G's web site says that theirs uses the original mounts but doesn't show a picture or explain any more except to say that the drum must be removed to install. I think I'll call Monday and try to get more information.

Drake's latest catalog shows the bolt-on style lower brackets that bolt on using the backing plate bolts(same as the 48 Ford original brackets). That would be the same style bracket sold by C and G. C and G will give you the information that you need.
