Topic: Installed coil

I know this probably has happen to other folks. When I installed the coil on my original 34 car, the spring loaded carbon tip was not compressed like it should have been. It was pinch at an angle to the rotor. The engine ran good and I did not notice this until I removed the distributor to replace a gasket. The carbon tip, being pinched at an angle, cut a small groove in the brass part of the rotor. I installed it back correctly and the engine runs good, but could it cause a future problem due to the face of the tip not making complete contact with the rotor. It makes contact with the rotor except for the small area on the center of the rotor that was worn out. Would I be getting less of a spark by having this condition or causing any harm?

It is likely that the tip will wear enough to accommodate the groove in the rotor. As long as you have sufficient spring tension, I doubt you will see any difference. Getting the coil squarely on the distributor before cinching it down is necessary, but many, many others have made the same error. Eventually it will be necessary to replace at least the rotor, but for now, I wouldn't worry.
