Hi Guys; I am putting new windshield glass in my 40. I took the old ones out this morning. On the lower lip and sides there was a dark gray small bead of caulk or dum dum in the bottom of the lip.It was dried up so i cleaned it all out but i am wondering if it was supposed to be there. If i remember they go in from the inside and out. The left side first and right side next with cord in the outer lip. Any tips or advise on this installation would be appreciated. Thank you.

I suspect the material was a sealer applied long ago. First, be absolutely sure you have the correct gasket. More than once, we have been shipped the wrong one. Be sure the metal edge of the opening is clean and any places that are bent should be fixed. Any windshield replacement is a two person job. When you have the glass and gasket in place, seal the gasket to the body with a good product, such as 3M. Usually, no sealer is necessary between the glass and the gasket. It is not unusual to find the remnants of sealer used to cure leaks around an undersized glass or poorly installed windshield.
