Topic: SPEEDO NEEDLE JUMPS AROUND

rogbell    -- 05-04-2011 @ 11:59 AM
For the first time I was able to drive my '41 over 25 mph and noticed that when I exceeded 35 the speedo needle jumped around between 35 and 50. Does the cable need replacing, lubricating or tightening? Thanks in advance for all suggestions.

I would lube it and see if that helps. If not, it's probably a worn gear in the speedo housing which is common and not harmful unless it really bugs you; at which point I would have the speedometer rebuilt.

Disconnect the cable at either end and pull the inner cable out. If it is not kinked or badly rusted, coat the cable with white lithium grease as you put it back in the sheath. You can get that grease at most auto parts stores. If the cable balks when it reaches the speedometer (or the drive gear), turn it as you push, and it should match the square drive. If either the sheath or inner cable is worn, a new set is in order. C&G (800/266-0470) has them for under $20. Ask for item B-17260-R.
