Topic: Spring shackles

I have the rear axle assembly out of my '36. It's a driver.

I don't want to do the job twice, so I'm thinking about replacing the spring shackles while it's apart.

I see that C&G has the standard shackles for around $25 and a Teflon version for $50.

Anyone have any experience with the Teflon type? Should I spend the extra money?

Mike, yes, I have installed the teflon shackles and ma happy with the results. As yours is a driver, I'd certainly go for this option over stock.

Removing the old shackles can be tricky, but you are able to use the experience of others by way of this forum: cinch down a vise grips on one end of the shaft and heat the other end cherry red. Heat the shaft only, not the spring. You'll get smoke, so do it outside. Crank the wrench till it loosens enough to pull the shaft. After it cools sufficiently, install a hacksaw blade through the hole and cut the remaining metal/fiber bushing. Then you can grab it with vise grips and pull it out. The new bushing will go in without a problem.

I also recommend the teflon shackles for your car. Easy to install and they will last a long time.
