You are actually looking for the serial number that is used as a vehicle identification number. The short answer is on the top of the left frame rail between the cowl and front crossmember. Go here for more than you ever wanted to know and the whole story:

Ford did not use a VIN number as we know it today. The number is a sequential engine serial number stamped on the top of the transmission at the Rouge engine plant. When the engine was installed in a frame at an assembly plant the number was transferred to the top of the left frame rail in three places, two of which are under the body. The one you are looking for is somewhere between the firewall and the radiator. Mine is directly in line with the cross member.

Be very careful looking for it. The number may be hidden by paint, crud, or rust. It may be very faint and will be obliterated by aggressive scr*ping. If you have the original transmission the number is at the very top just above the little inspection door.

The number is nothing more than an engine serial number. It will tell you nothing about the body, assembly location, or all the other information we are used to getting in a modern VIN number.

Also, be aware that the number starts and ends with a star. Way back, someone thought the stars in my number were four's and my VIN was wrong for years.
